Day 0

I took the early train to Friedrichshafen Airport with a number of kgs over the maximum luggage allowance. This time I was without road bike and hopefully also without covid, unlike the “worst holiday ever”. I arrived in Zagreb in the afternoon and met Ari at the airport. We collected our “green motion” rental car (green from green washing) and began the 3 hour journey to the coast. We stopped in Vodice for the night at an Air Bnb with an awesomely friendly host.

Day 1

We parked at the kayak rental in Vodice, a short walk from the sea and packed our rental kayak. It was a hazy cloudy morning but warm enough. We weaved our way out into the ocean with a slight tendency to veer right, made worse by the fact that the double sea kayak was missing a rudder. Our paddling took us towards the same island we’d stayed at in 2019 but as the sun came out so did a change of plans and we headed West scooting between two islands. We followed the coast of the island Tijat South until we found a small bay where we stopped to stretch our legs and have some bread with… bread. We continued around the side of the island and then headed more or less directly towards the island Zlarin.

We landed and our nice Air BnB host met us at the water in one of the 100s of golf carts on the island. Cars are not allowed. We left the kayak with a number of others in a pile out of the way and were chauffeured up the hill to our accommodation. The only thing missing were the golf clubs and the pomp. We had a nice little apartment with a view from one window out over the rooftops.

Day 2

As we are quite out of shape for kayaking we decided to give our arms a rest and went for a walk around the island instead. It was quite warm and the wind got up in the afternoon. Once it dropped we set off about an hour before dusk to hunt the sunset. We bobbed around the side of the island in the evening colours and watched, after some time, as the sun set gracefully into a bank of cloud. Hmmm…

Day 3

We left in the morning to avoid the wind but there wasn’t any, at least not while we were kayaking. It was completely flat. We kayaked more or less directly back towards Vodice around the other side of the island Prvić, our 2019 destination.  In the afternoon we drove to Starigrad where we met Johannes and Marie for our climbing trip.
