On Sunday I caught the train to Frastanz. It was a little warmer than Saturday with plenty of sun. I ran South from the station into the hills and up a long valley leading to Steg. I started at 1pm and it took a good few hours to get up the valley as the track became quite rough after crossing the border into Liechtenstein. Luckily I had some liquid drum and bass to accompany me and the views up into the mountains above were very nice. The leaves on the trees were beginning to turn golden brown.
It was a little shady in Steg, well near Steg, I took a shortcut shortly before, heading straight up to the road. From there I joined a walking tracking and headed through a small tunnel to the other side of the hills. It was much sunnier and warmer again and I jogged up to the Furstensteig which I did with Leonie and Timo last year. It was around 5pm at this stage but the sun was shining across the Rheintal and onto the path. I navigated the winding trail up to the ridge and then started heading along the ridge. The track followed the shady side of the ridge and the sun was beginning to get quite low above the hills.
It was about this point that my water ran out and I decided I should try and pick up the pace. I followed the ridge and by about 6:30 pm I was on top of The Three Sisters. They were a little cold by this time in the evening and I didn’t stop as I wanted to get down to some runnable trail before it got dark. There is a technical section after the sisters with a couple of ladders and some parts where you should watch your feet. I slowly headed down until I reached the junction leading to a hut in Liechtenstein or towards the Feldkircher Huette. I headed towards the latter and filled up a bit of emergency water from the inlet to a cow trough. I followed the now wide forestry road to the Feldkircher Huette which was unfortunately closed.
I decided to have a hunt around for the possibility of water anyway, discovering the beer on tap outside that hadn’t been shut off properly. But I wasn’t there to steal beer, I wanted water. There was a tap by the hut and I filled up. I headed into a very dark forest next to the hut with my headlamp on. After a short talk with a raccoon, I descended slowly until I reached another forestry road. I made my way down eventually deciding to head back to Frastanz rather than to Feldkirch, although the distance would have been the same.
I luckily made my train on time and headed back to Lindau in the now dark evening.
