The day started with a 4am presentation to DoC from Trondheim and then continued with Johannes and I picking up Hana and driving to the airport. We flew to Tromsø, picked up our rental car and my rental skis (due to the incompetence of GLS I didn’t have my own skis). After finding our Air BnB down by the sea in Kaldfjord we got ready to go out for a tour. The weather was typically Norwegian, i.e. a bit mixed but the cloud began to clear over the mountain in front of us as we arrived at the car park. We skinned up through scraggly trees up an easy gradient. There had been adverts on the screens at the airport warning of the avalanche danger and we had heard of some French guys who had died last week in the nearby Lyngen Alps. We weren’t interested in taking any risks and this tour was nice and happy. We skinned up to Rødtinden, the first peak on the range. It hadn’t taken long so we decided to continue crossing a flatter section to Storbogtinden. We had a view from there down to the fiord on the other side. It was looking moody and grey.

Skins off and then some obligatory jumping photos before we descended back to the car. There were patches of powder with submerged large hard lumps underneath. I cautiously tested the handling of my rental skis and was surprised how much my quads burned on the downhill. Back to the Air BnB for dinner and bed.
